Women Narcissists

Uploaded 9/19/2010, approx. 4 minute read

I am Sam Vaknin, and I am the author of Malignant Self-Love, Narcissism Revisited.

A sizable minority of narcissists are women. I keep using the male third person because most narcissists, about three quarters, are males, but more importantly because there is little difference between the male and female narcissists.

In the manifestation of their narcissism, female and male narcissists inevitably do tend to differ. They emphasize different things. They transform different elements of their personalities and of their lives into the cornerstones of their disorder.

Women, for instance, concentrate on their body. Many also suffer eating disorders. Women flaunt and exploit their physical charms, their sexuality, their socially and culturally determined femininity. They secure the narcissistic supply through their more traditional gender role, the home, children, suitable careers, their husbands, their feminine traits, their roles in society, etc.

It is no wonder that narcissists, both men and women, are chauvinistic and conservative. They depend to such an extent on the opinions of people around them that with time they are transformed into ultra-sensitive seismographs of public opinion, barometers of prevailing social fashions, and guardians of conformity.

The narcissists cannot afford to seriously alienate his constituency, the people who reflect his false self back at him. The very proper and ongoing functioning of the narcissist's personality depends on the goodwill and on the collaboration of his human environment.

It is true that besieged and consumed by pernicious guilt feelings, many narcissists finally seek to be punished. The self-destructive narcissist then plays the role of the bad guy or bad girl. But even then it is within the traditional socially allocated roles.

To ensure social opprobrium, in other words, attention, the narcissist exaggerates these roles of bad girl and bad guy to a caricature. A woman is likely to label herself a whore and a main narcissist to self-style himself a vicious, unrepentant criminal. Yet these again are actually traditional social roles.

Women are likely to emphasize intellect, power, aggression, money or social status. Women are likely to emphasize body, looks, charm, sexuality, feminine traits, homemaking, children and child rearing, even as they seek their masochistic punishment.

Another difference between male and female narcissists is in the way the genders react to treatment. Women are more likely to resort to therapy because they are more likely to admit to psychological problems.

But while men may be less inclined to disclose or to expose their problems to others, macho men, it doesn't necessarily imply that men are less prone to admit it to themselves. Women are also more likely to ask for help than men generally.

Yet the prime rule of narcissism is never forgotten. The narcissist uses everything around him or her to obtain his or her narcissistic supply.

Children happen to be more attached to the female narcissist, owing to the way our society is still structured and to the fact that women are the ones to give birth. It is easier therefore for a woman to think of her children as extensions because they once indeed were her physical extensions and because her ongoing interaction with them is both more intensive and more extensive.

This means that a male narcissist is more likely to regard his children as a nuisance than as a source of rewarding narcissistic supply. That is especially true as they grow older, become autonomous and critical.

Devoid of the diversity of alternatives available to men, narcissistic women fight to maintain their most reliable source of supply, their children.

Through insidious indoctrination, guilt formation, emotional sanctions, deprivation, emotional blackmail and other psychological mechanisms, women narcissists try to induce in their children dependence, which cannot be easily unraveled.

But when we tackle the foundations of narcissism, when push comes to shove in a way, there is no psychodynamic difference between children, money, intellect, possessions, positions. There are all sources of narcissistic supply. So there's no psychodynamic difference between male and female narcissists.

They simply choose different sources of supply, but it doesn't make them different.

The only real difference between them is, as I said, in their sources of narcissistic supply. All other facets are literally identical.

There are mental disorders which affect and afflict a specific sex more often than not.

This has to do with hormone or physiological dispositions, with social cultural conditioning through the socialization process and with role assignment through the gender differentiation process.

But none of these seem to be strongly correlated to the formation of malignant narcissism.

Narcissistic personality disorder, for instance, to borderline or histrionic personality disorder. Narcissistic personality disorder seems to conform to social mores and to the prevailing efforts of capitalism.

Social thinkers like Christopher Lash and even Theodore Millon speculated that modern American culture, narcissistic and vicious, individualistic and self-centered one, increases the rate of incidence of narcissistic personality disorder among both males and females.

As Kernberg observed, the most I would be willing to say, he said, is that society can make serious psychological abnormalities which already exist in some percentage of a population seem to be at least superficially appropriate.

Narcissists: Homosexual and Transsexual

Research indicates no significant psychological differences between narcissists with homosexual preferences and those with heterosexual preferences, though homosexuals may define themselves more by their sexual identity. This self-definition can lead to a heightened focus on the body and sexuality, resulting in somatic narcissism, where individuals derive their self-worth from physical attributes and sexual conquests. The pursuit of sexual validation becomes addictive, and routine can threaten the narcissist's sense of uniqueness. Additionally, there are parallels between narcissism and gender dysphoria, with some transsexuals exhibiting narcissistic traits in their pursuit of gender reassignment, reflecting a desire to fulfill a fantasy of self-objectification and entitlement.

Narcissists: Masculine and Feminine

Narcissism is a defining trait of our world and its people, with self-absorption, greed, and exploitation being commonplace. Narcissistic personality disorder is three times more prevalent among men than women, and this is due to the social mores and values of macho-capitalism. Women with narcissistic personality disorder tend to focus on their bodies and femininity, while men emphasize intellect, power, aggression, money, or social status. Narcissists conform to traditional gender roles and are chauvinistically conservative, depending on the opinions of those around them to maintain their false self.

Narcissistic Women vs. Borderline Women vs. Narcissistic Men

Professor Sam Vaknin discusses the differences between men and women when it comes to personality disorders. He states that there is little difference between male and female narcissists in terms of their psychodynamics, but their behaviors may differ due to societal and cultural expectations. Within the same diagnosis, the variation between men and women is low, but the variation between diagnoses is much higher. Vaknin also notes that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) is gender-neutral in its language, but some claims within it can be seen as sexist.

Narcissist Female Bosses Outbest Male Narcissist CEOs

Postmodern society often portrays women as inherently good and men as inherently bad, a concept known as splitting. Recent studies indicate that narcissistic women, particularly in leadership roles, can be more pro-social and effective than their male counterparts, with female CEOs showing superior corporate performance linked to their narcissism. This performance advantage stems from their ability to leverage positive aspects of narcissism while suppressing its darker traits, such as exploitiveness and aggression. Overall, the findings suggest that narcissism, especially in female leaders, can enhance corporate outcomes, challenging traditional views on gender and leadership dynamics.

Narcissistic Serial and Mass Killers

Serial killers exemplify malignant narcissism, characterized by a lack of empathy, objectification of others, and a grandiose sense of entitlement. They seek to exert absolute control over their victims, often viewing them as extensions of themselves, and believe that by killing, they are purifying or improving their victims. This behavior stems from a deep-seated fear of abandonment and humiliation, leading to a cycle of violence that serves as a form of catharsis and revenge against perceived societal wrongs. Ultimately, both narcissists and serial killers operate within a framework of objectification, devoid of genuine human connection, and are products of a pathological societal structure that fosters such behaviors.

Are All Homosexuals Narcissists? (LINK in Description, Othering Failure FEATURE, not BUG)

Not all homosexuals are narcissists, nor are all narcissists homosexuals; both groups can experience an "othering problem," which is not indicative of mental illness. Othering is a process of recognizing the separateness of oneself from others, and while healthy individuals typically transition from internal to external othering, some individuals, including narcissists, may remain stuck in internal othering. Othering failure, characterized by an inability to perceive external objects as separate from oneself, can manifest in various personality styles and is not inherently pathological. Homosexuality is not a mental illness, and while some homosexuals may exhibit traits associated with othering failure, this does not equate to a psychological disorder.

Narcissist's Dead Libido (ENGLISH responses)

The concept of libido, originally associated with the sexual drive, was initially viewed negatively by Freud, who saw it as a dangerous force within the primitive id that required control by the ego. Jung later reframed libido as a positive life force, encompassing creativity and vitality, a view that Freud eventually adopted in his later writings. Narcissists, however, lack a true libido, as their early trauma leads to a focus on maintenance rather than life expression, viewing relationships and even children as mere sources of supply rather than meaningful connections. Ultimately, narcissism is characterized by a profound non-existence, where the individual operates as a simulation devoid of genuine life or emotional depth.

Lidija and Sam: The Tide of Narcissism (1st in Series "Fly on the Wall")

Social media blurs the line between virtual and real reality, leading to addiction and confusion. The positive reward system of likes and shares encourages extreme behavior and radicalization. Social media creates a clash between reality and virtual or augmented reality, and the false self is unique on social media, not the real self. Narcissists use social media as an addiction to maintain their grandiosity and avoid disintegration.

Psychopath Sees You, Narcissist Doesn't (EXCERPT with Eve Tawfik, UK Journalist)

Psychopathic narcissists, or malignant narcissists, primarily focus on self-aggrandizement, while psychopaths aim to control and dominate others, viewing them as possessions. Both personality types engage in unhealthy relationships, using intimacy and romance to self-regulate their internal issues, leading to a lack of genuine connection and the erasure of their partners' identities. Modern dating culture has become increasingly narcissistic, with individuals treating potential partners as commodities rather than valuing mutual respect and growth. This trend reflects a broader societal malaise, where materialism and isolation take precedence over meaningful human interactions, contributing to a decline in the fabric of Western civilization.

Lonely World, Schizoid Future (and Sex)

The schizoid core, characterized by a lack of identity and a void, is at the foundation of personality and character pathologies. Society is gravitating towards a schizoid solution, with people preferring solitude and avoiding interactions with others. The schizoid world is becoming more narcissistic, psychopathic, and autoerotic, with sex being the last remaining vestige of human contact. The future will be a society in flux, with ad hoc self-assembling networks and no concept of institutions, intimate relationships, or politics.
