Women Narcissists

I am Sam Vaknin, and I am the author of Malignant Self-Love, Narcissism Revisited.

A sizable minority of narcissists are women. I keep using the male third person because most narcissists, about three quarters, are males, but more importantly because there is little difference between the male and female narcissists.

In the manifestation of their narcissism, female and male narcissists inevitably do tend to differ. They emphasize different things. They transform different elements of their personalities and of their lives into the cornerstones of their disorder.

Women, for instance, concentrate on their body. Many also suffer eating disorders. Women flaunt and exploit their physical charms, their sexuality, their socially and culturally determined femininity. They secure the narcissistic supply through their more traditional gender role, the home, children, suitable careers, their husbands, their feminine traits, their roles in society, etc.

It is no wonder that narcissists, both men and women, are chauvinistic and conservative. They depend to such an extent on the opinions of people around them that with time they are transformed into ultra-sensitive seismographs of public opinion, barometers of prevailing social fashions, and guardians of conformity.

The narcissists cannot afford to seriously alienate his constituency, the people who reflect his false self back at him. The very proper and ongoing functioning of the narcissist's personality depends on the goodwill and on the collaboration of his human environment.

It is true that besieged and consumed by pernicious guilt feelings, many narcissists finally seek to be punished. The self-destructive narcissist then plays the role of the bad guy or bad girl. But even then it is within the traditional socially allocated roles.

To ensure social opprobrium, in other words, attention, the narcissist exaggerates these roles of bad girl and bad guy to a caricature. A woman is likely to label herself a whore and a main narcissist to self-style himself a vicious, unrepentant criminal. Yet these again are actually traditional social roles.

Women are likely to emphasize intellect, power, aggression, money or social status. Women are likely to emphasize body, looks, charm, sexuality, feminine traits, homemaking, children and child rearing, even as they seek their masochistic punishment.

Another difference between male and female narcissists is in the way the genders react to treatment. Women are more likely to resort to therapy because they are more likely to admit to psychological problems.

But while men may be less inclined to disclose or to expose their problems to others, macho men, it doesn't necessarily imply that men are less prone to admit it to themselves. Women are also more likely to ask for help than men generally.

Yet the prime rule of narcissism is never forgotten. The narcissist uses everything around him or her to obtain his or her narcissistic supply.

Children happen to be more attached to the female narcissist, owing to the way our society is still structured and to the fact that women are the ones to give birth. It is easier therefore for a woman to think of her children as extensions because they once indeed were her physical extensions and because her ongoing interaction with them is both more intensive and more extensive.

This means that a male narcissist is more likely to regard his children as a nuisance than as a source of rewarding narcissistic supply. That is especially true as they grow older, become autonomous and critical.

Devoid of the diversity of alternatives available to men, narcissistic women fight to maintain their most reliable source of supply, their children.

Through insidious indoctrination, guilt formation, emotional sanctions, deprivation, emotional blackmail and other psychological mechanisms, women narcissists try to induce in their children dependence, which cannot be easily unraveled.

But when we tackle the foundations of narcissism, when push comes to shove in a way, there is no psychodynamic difference between children, money, intellect, possessions, positions. There are all sources of narcissistic supply. So there's no psychodynamic difference between male and female narcissists.

They simply choose different sources of supply, but it doesn't make them different.

The only real difference between them is, as I said, in their sources of narcissistic supply. All other facets are literally identical.

There are mental disorders which affect and afflict a specific sex more often than not.

This has to do with hormone or physiological dispositions, with social cultural conditioning through the socialization process and with role assignment through the gender differentiation process.

But none of these seem to be strongly correlated to the formation of malignant narcissism.

Narcissistic personality disorder, for instance, to borderline or histrionic personality disorder. Narcissistic personality disorder seems to conform to social mores and to the prevailing efforts of capitalism.

Social thinkers like Christopher Lash and even Theodore Millon speculated that modern American culture, narcissistic and vicious, individualistic and self-centered one, increases the rate of incidence of narcissistic personality disorder among both males and females.

As Kernberg observed, the most I would be willing to say, he said, is that society can make serious psychological abnormalities which already exist in some percentage of a population seem to be at least superficially appropriate.

Narcissism Evolving: 3 Disturbing Trends

Women have become as narcissistic as men, if not more so, as gender roles shift and women try to emulate men. Narcissists are becoming more dangerous, leveraging their cold empathy more sinisterly and becoming more malignantly grandiose and even criminalized. People, even narcissists, no longer have role models and everyone claims superiority, leading to pathological envy and a society where no one can be better than anyone else. This narcissism is going to kill and destroy us as a species.

Covert Narcissist's Abuse= Coercive Control?

Today's lecture covers covert narcissistic abuse and coercive control. Covert narcissists engage in passive-aggressive abuse, creating networks of people to target and manipulate others. Coercive control, a rare phenomenon, involves intimidation, social isolation, invasive monitoring, and deprivation of basic needs. It is a premeditated, goal-oriented strategy that is not the result of mental illness and should be fought against. This type of control is distinct from typical abuse and reflects a power asymmetry.

Narcissists: Masculine and Feminine

Narcissism is a defining trait of our world and its people, with self-absorption, greed, and exploitation being commonplace. Narcissistic personality disorder is three times more prevalent among men than women, and this is due to the social mores and values of macho-capitalism. Women with narcissistic personality disorder tend to focus on their bodies and femininity, while men emphasize intellect, power, aggression, money, or social status. Narcissists conform to traditional gender roles and are chauvinistically conservative, depending on the opinions of those around them to maintain their false self.

Narcissism, Friendship, Egoism: Self-Interest is not Self-Welfare

Narcissists fail to meet the criteria for friendship, as they lack empathy, have cognitive deficits, and are impulsive and predictable. True egoism is the active pursuit of self-welfare, not just self-interest, and altruism is the outcome of social conditioning to avoid anxiety. The optimal mix of self-interest and altruism exists for individuals and society, and the narcissist fails to understand this due to their lack of empathy and inability to optimize their behavior.

Histrionic Woman's Guide to Men

Histrionic women respond differently to two types of men. The first type is men who openly desire the histrionic woman, but after a brief affair, they begin to bore her. The second type is men who are visibly attracted to the histrionic, but are very avoidant emotionally, or even absent emotionally. Histrionic women abhor intimacy and love, but they need mind games. With these men, there is always some game going on.

Narcissists: Homosexual and Transsexual

Research has found no significant difference between the psychological makeup of a narcissist with homosexual preferences and a heterosexual narcissist. However, the self-definition of homosexuals is often based on their sexual identity, which can lead to somatic narcissism. Homosexual relations are highly narcissistic and autoerotic affairs, with the somatic narcissist directing their libido at their own body. Transsexuals may also exhibit narcissistic tendencies, with some seeking sex reassignment due to an idealized overvaluation of themselves and a sense of entitlement.

Old-age Narcissist

Narcissists age without grace, unable to accept their fallibility and mortality. They suffer from mental progeria, aging prematurely and finding themselves in a time warp. The longer they live, the more average they become, and the wider the gulf between their pretensions and accomplishments. Few narcissists save for rainy days, and those who succeed in their vocation end up bitterly alone, having squandered the love of family, offspring, and mates.

Passive Aggressive Or Covert Narcissist?

Covert narcissists and passive-aggressive individuals share some traits, but there are key differences between them. Covert narcissism involves hidden grandiosity, while passive aggression is about internalizing negative emotions and expressing them indirectly. Both can be emotionally invested in failure and have a negative impact on others. However, passive-aggressive individuals focus more on frustrating and undermining others, while covert narcissists are more invested in their own grandiosity.

The “Lone Wolf” Narcissist and His Prey

Narcissists require constant validation and attention, and their sense of entitlement clashes with their dependence on others for self-worth. Lone wolf narcissists who withdraw from society can become dangerous due to their unquenched hunger for narcissistic supply. Schizoids, on the other hand, are indifferent to social relationships and have a limited range of emotions and affect. Psychopaths lack empathy and disregard others as instruments of gratification, and they are often criminals. When narcissism, schizoid disorder, and psychopathy converge, it can result in extremely dangerous individuals.

Narcissist's Constant Midlife Crisis

The midlife crisis is a much-discussed but little understood phenomenon. There is no link between physiological and hormonal developments and the mythical midlife crisis. The narcissist is best equipped to tackle this problem as they suffer from mental progeria and are in a constant mid-life crisis. The narcissist's personality is rigid, but their life is not. It is changeable, mutable, and tumultuous. The narcissist does not go through a midlife crisis because they are forever the child, forever dreaming and fantasizing, forever enamored with themselves.
