Somatic Narcissist: Not Sex, But Pursuit and Conquest

Uploaded 5/3/2014, approx. 4 minute read

My name is Sam Vaknin, and I am the author of Malignant Self-Love, Narcissism Revisited.

Somatic narcissists are often portrayed as sex addicts or histrionic, but really they derive the narcissistic supply not so much from the sex act as from the process of securing it.

The conspiracies, the assignations, the chase and the conquest, subjugation and habituation of their targets, and even from dumping and discarding their prey, once having extracted the attention and admiration they had sought.

These extracurricular activities, the chase, the conspiracy, the assignation, these endow the somatic narcissist with a sense of omnipotence and all pervasive control.

His sway over his paramours and would-be lovers proves to the somatic narcissist and to others that he is unique, desirable and irresistible.

300 years before the term narcissism for the word narcissism was coined by Sigmund Freud, another great mind, William Shakespeare, has written Sonnet number 62, which describes perfectly the somatic narcissist.

Listen to this. Sin of self-love possesseth all mine eye, and all my soul, and all my every part.

And for this sin there is no remedy.

It is so grounded inward in my heart.

He thinks no face so gracious is as mine, no shape so true, no truth of such account.

And for myself mine own worth do define, and I, all other, in all worths, surmount.

But when my glass shows me myself indeed, beated and chopped with tanned antiquity, mine own self-love quite contrary, I read.

Self, so self-loving, were iniquity. It is thee, myself, therefore my senpai praise, painting my age with beauty of thy days.

Perfect.

Shakespeare captured the essence of somatic narcissism, and narcissism in general, in this single sonnet, better than a hundred scholars in a hundred voluminous, well-researched, deep, academic tones.

Narcissists are either cerebral or somatic. In other words, they either generate the narcissistic supply by applying their bodies or by applying their minds.

The somatic narcissist flaunts his sexual conquests, parades his possessions, exhibits his muscles, brags about his physical aesthetics or sexual prowess or exploits, and is often a health freak, a bodybuilder or a hypochondriac.

The somatic narcissist regards his body as an object to be sculpted and honed via extreme diets, multiple cosmetic surgeries, bodybuilding or weightlifting.

When coupled with psychopathic tendencies, the somatic narcissist appropriates other people's bodies and treats these bodies as raw materials to be dismembered, tempered with, altered, invaded or otherwise abused.

Utilation is a hallmark of a somatic narcissist's sadistic and psychopathic behavior.

The cerebral narcissist, on the other hand, is a no-eat-aller. He is haughty and kind of intelligent robot or computer. He uses his awesome intellect or knowledge, real or pretended sometimes, to secure adoration, adulation and admiration.

To the cerebral narcissist, his body and its maintenance are a burden, a distraction.

Both types, the somatic and the cerebral, are auto-erotic, psychosexually in love with themselves, with their own bodies or with their brain. Both types prefer masturbation to adult, mature, interactive, multi-dimensional and emotion-laden sex with an intimate pattern.

The cerebral narcissist is often celibate. Even when he has a girlfriend or a spouse, he usually abstains from sex. He prefers pornography and sexual auto-stimulation to the ring thing.

The cerebral narcissist is sometimes a latent, hidden, not-yet-altered homosexual.

The somatic narcissist uses other people's bodies to masturbate. Sex with the somatic narcissist, pyrotechnics and acrobatic society is likely to be an impersonal and emotionally alienating and draining experience.

The partner is often treated as an object, an extension of the somatic narcissist, a kind of toy, a warm and pulsating vibrator.

It is a mistake to assume type constancy. In other words, all narcissists are both cerebral and somatic.

In each narcissist, one of the types is dominant, so the narcissist is either overwhelmingly cerebral or dominantly somatic.

But the other type, the recessive type, the type that manifests less frequently, is there. It is lurking, it is waiting to erupt.

The narcissist swings between his dominant type and his recessive type. The recessive type is expressed mainly as a result of and following a major narcissistic injury or a substantial life crisis.

So cerebral narcissists and somatic narcissists are two sides of the same cone. This is never to be forgotten. The narcissist will always astound you with his sudden pendular shifts between two personalities, a Mr. Jekyll and a Dr. Hyde.

Cerebral Narcissist: Woman? What's That For?

Somatic narcissists derive their self-worth from sexual conquests, while cerebral narcissists lack an understanding of sexual attraction and intimacy. The speaker describes a profound emptiness and inability to connect with others, leading to confusion and repulsion in relationships, as women sense his underlying dysfunction. This internal conflict between narcissism and a schizoid disposition creates a painful push-pull dynamic, where the desire for connection is overshadowed by an aversion to intimacy. Ultimately, the speaker feels like a hollow vessel, unable to engage meaningfully with others, resulting in a deep sense of alienation.

Brain, Brawn, Body, Bluff: Narcissists, Somatic, Covert, Cerebral, and Classic

Narcissists can be either somatic or cerebral, depending on whether they use their physical appearance or intellect to obtain supply. While there is no constancy, there is type dominance, with cerebral narcissists emphasizing their intellect and somatic narcissists emphasizing their physical appearance. Narcissists are competitive and ambitious in sex, using their partner's body as an animated dildo or masturbatory object. Covert narcissists, who are mostly women, tend to be largely asexual due to deep-set inferiority complexes and body dysmorphic disorders. They may engage in body-altering behaviors such as surgeries and look-maxing, which is more prevalent among covert somatic narcissists. Altruism can also be a form of ostentatious narcissism.

Narcissist's Sexual Identities (ENGLISH responses)

Narcissists lack an ego and have no reality test, so they rely on other people to provide them with narcissistic supply. The cerebral narcissist uses their intellect to obtain supply, while the somatic narcissist uses their body and sex. However, all narcissists are both cerebral and somatic, with a dominant and recessive side. The dominant side is usually 70-80% of their life, but there is fluctuation between the two types. Narcissists are frozen at a young age and have no sexual or gender identity, leading to infantilization and reaction formation to their own sexuality.

Hidden Worlds of Cerebral, Somatic Narcissists (Compilation)

Cerebral narcissists exhibit a distinct detachment from their own bodies and often suppress their sexual drives, focusing instead on intellectual pursuits to secure narcissistic supply. This leads to a dynamic where they may allow or even encourage their partners to seek intimacy and sexual fulfillment elsewhere, as they themselves are unable or unwilling to provide it. The phenomenon of narcissistic tunneling describes how the recessive traits of a narcissist can occasionally surface, revealing hidden aspects of their personality that contradict their dominant type. This interplay between dominant and recessive traits creates a complex landscape of behavior, where narcissists may unexpectedly display characteristics typical of their less dominant type, often in response to environmental cues or personal crises.

Narcissist's Alien Sexuality: Cerebral, Somatic, and In-between (Compilation)

Somatic narcissists derive their self-worth from sexual conquests, while cerebral narcissists prioritize intellect and often view sex as a chore. Cerebral narcissists may experience sexual hyperactivity following crises but revert to asexuality as their grandiosity is restored, leading to emotional detachment from partners. Both types of narcissists objectify their partners, with somatic narcissists treating them as extensions of themselves and cerebral narcissists using sex as a means to capture and control. Ultimately, the interplay between narcissistic supply and sexuality creates a cycle of attraction and repulsion, leaving partners feeling rejected and inadequate.

Body Narcissism: Tattoos, Gym Rats, Bodybuilders, Fashionistas, Sex Fiends

Narcissism creates a conflicted relationship with the body, where somatic narcissists idealize their bodies while cerebral narcissists devalue them, leading both to view their bodies as adversaries. Somatic narcissists engage in behaviors to maintain and enhance their bodies, often using them as tools for narcissistic supply, while cerebral narcissists deny their bodies' existence, leading to a disconnection from reality. This disconnection results in a range of compulsive behaviors and anxiety, as both types of narcissists struggle with the inevitability of aging and bodily decay. Ultimately, while somatic narcissists may be less developed psychologically, they maintain a closer connection to reality through their bodies compared to cerebral narcissists, who suffer from a deeper estrangement and denial of their physical selves.

Classifying Narcissists: Sanity and Masks

Narcissism is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that can be categorized into various typologies, including those proposed by scholars like Theodore Millon and Drew Westen. Millon identifies four types of narcissists: elitist, amorous, unprincipled, and compensatory, while Westen categorizes them into high-functioning, fragile, and grandiose types. The distinction between cerebral and somatic narcissists highlights how individuals derive their narcissistic supply either from intellect or physicality, with each type exhibiting unique behaviors and interpersonal dynamics. Additionally, the concept of inverted narcissism describes individuals who are codependent on narcissists, seeking validation and self-worth through their relationships with them. Overall, understanding these typologies is crucial for recognizing the diverse expressions of narcissism and their implications in interpersonal relationships.

Why Cerebral Narcissist Becomes Somatic ( Aging, Death)

Cerebral narcissists often experience a stable psychosexual identity characterized by sublimation, where their sexual energy is redirected into intellectual pursuits from a very young age, leading to a lack of sexual drive. This stability can shift dramatically when they undergo a narcissistic collapse, prompting a transition to somatic narcissism, where they seek sexual experiences as a new means of obtaining narcissistic supply. The transformation is often driven by a desire to deny aging and mortality, leading them to pursue sexual relationships, particularly with younger partners, as a way to reclaim lost vitality. Ultimately, this shift results in compulsive sexual behavior, where partners are often viewed as interchangeable, and the narcissist grapples with the emotional fallout of their previous denial of their sexual self.

Sex and Narcissistic Supply: Cerebral, Somatic, and YOU!

Narcissists objectify and interchange intimate partners, and are often sexually deviant. The cerebral narcissist suppresses their sexual predilections to maintain a gratifying and exclusive relationship with their source of secondary supply, while the somatic narcissist indulges their sexual preferences with multiple partners. The cerebral narcissist would rather hurt their partner by withholding sex than lose them altogether, while the somatic narcissist seeks out unstable partners to regulate their sense of self-worth. Sex is a necessary evil to the cerebral narcissist, while it is a source of narcissistic supply to the somatic narcissist.

Somatic Narcissists as Wannabe Gurus/Intellectuals

Somatic narcissists derive their self-worth from their physical appearance and sexual conquests, while cerebral narcissists gain validation from their intellectual prowess. A specific subset of somatic narcissists pretends to be cerebral, engaging in self-deception and deception of others, which classifies them as covert narcissists. These individuals often lack genuine intelligence and resort to stealing ideas from true intellectuals, presenting themselves as knowledgeable while actually being incapable of original thought. They pose a significant threat to society, often manipulating and exploiting others under the guise of being empathetic or wise, and should be recognized and exposed for their harmful behaviors.
